Definition

Gram: grams per square metre

It is a standard textile specification describing the mass of fabric per unit area. A 500 Gram fleece weighs 500 grams for every square metre of fabric.

As the measurement is taken per square metre rather than per finished blanket, it permits direct comparison between fabrics irrespective of cut size. This is the basis for its use as the industry reference specification.

As Gram increases, the fabric generally becomes heavier, thicker and more substantial in the hand. This relationship forms the basis on which the product range is structured.

Technical Note

Weight and thermal performance

A higher Gram figure denotes a heavier fabric. It does not of itself denote a warmer fabric, and the two should not be treated as equivalent when specifying.

Thermal performance in fleece derives from entrapped air rather than mass. A well-brushed, lofty 600 Gram construction may outperform a densely compacted 700 Gram construction. Fibre type, brushing, finishing and construction all affect the result.

Gram should therefore be used to establish weight class and price point, with performance confirmed against a physical sample of the specific construction offered.

Indicative guidance. Final selection depends on target climate, price point and end use.

Snow – 300 Gram

Mild climates, layering and Dohar. Specified for transitional seasons and layered bedding applications. The 88-inch width is available in this band for Dohar manufacturing.

400 – 500 Gram

Volume band. Everyday winter bedding for Indian and moderate export markets. Provides winter-weight substance while remaining practical to fold, pack and ship at volume.

600 – 700 Gram

Cold-weather specification. Specified where visible weight is a purchase criterion. Applied in premium retail winter ranges and colder northern markets.

800 – 1,000 Gram

Severe winter and premium positioning. Maximum blanket substance, specified for extreme-cold markets and premium retail positioning.
